Silkworm Farmers Receive Training Ahead of Spring Season

In April 2026, the Georgian Silk Association (GSA) organized online and in-person trainings for silkworm farmers at the Sericulture Laboratory of the Agricultural University. The trainings were held for people interested in producing raw silk this spring, with the rearing season starting in mid-May.

Thirty-five participants from Kakheti, Imereti, Guria, Kvemo Kartli, Shida Kartli, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, and Tbilisi attended the sessions. They received basic knowledge on the full silkworm rearing process, from start to harvest. Silk crafters were also invited to showcase their products, giving new farmers an idea of what can be made from silk. Participants were provided with Silkworm Rearing Guidelines.

I remember my parents rearing silkworms and producing silk, and I want to revive this tradition in my family. Practical tips are very important, as there are many small details to consider during rearing. I love crafting and plan to use my first harvest to make silk crafts. In the future, if I enjoy the process, I will increase production,” said one participant.

This year, the GSA expects the demand for the raw silk produced to exceed supply as awareness of the revival in Georgian silk production increases. The number of silkworm farmers increasing by 133% since last year and the amount is expected to increase year on year once new producers test production and increase their confidence.

The ALCP2 supported the establishment of the GSA, which plays an important role in supporting rural silk producers through access to silkworm eggs, production support, networking, linkages, advocacy and promotion.

The ALCP2 is implemented by Mercy Corps Georgia and funded by the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC), in cooperation with the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) and Sweden.
