Climate Adapted Extension in Beekeeping Starts Roll Out
A comprehensive new training manual has been introduced through the Georgian Beekeepers Union (GBU) extension system to address the growing challenges posed by climate change for beekeepers.
This resource equips extension specialists and trainers working with beekeepers across Georgia and serves as a practical guide for beekeepers themselves. It provides clear, actionable recommendations on all aspects of beekeeping, helping users adapt to climate-related risks while strengthening the resilience and sustainability of the honey sector. Beekeeping plays a vital role in Georgia’s economy, serving as both a primary and supplementary source of income for many households. Addressing climate-related challenges is therefore essential to sustaining production and protecting rural livelihoods.
The GBU, is dedicated to beekeeping extension and trainings and is coordinating the development and rollout of the manual with support from the ALCP2 programme. Implementation is being carried out in collaboration with the RDA, including trainings for extension specialists and vocational education and trainings (VET) colleges offering beekeeping programmes. Training for beekeepers is now underway. The manual was authored by GBU specialists in collaboration with beekeeping and development specialists from the ALCP2 programme.
Countering the Impact of Climate Change on Beekeeping in Georgia will also be available in the online library of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture (MEPA).
The ALCP2 implemented by Mercy Corps Georgia, is funded by the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) in cooperation with the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) and Sweden.
