World Bee Day in Borjomi
On May 20th, 2025, Georgia joined the global celebration of World Bee Day, established by the United Nations to recognize the vital role of bees in ecosystems and food security. A special event in Borjomi, organized by the Georgian Beekeepers Union (GBU), brought together beekeepers, scientists, government officials, and civil society to discuss current challenges and opportunities in the sector. The event featured an exhibition of local honey products and inputs, as well as discussions on climate change, disease prevention, and market trends.
The official program included expert presentations on ancient beekeeping practices, branding strategies, the impact of climate change, and updates on bee breeding efforts. Innovations like the Bee Pavilion apiary design were introduced. The event concluded with a focus on the ongoing Tropilaelaps outbreak in Western Georgia, emphasizing the importance of early detection and proper management to contain its spread and protect the industry.
The Georgian Beekeepers Union is facilitated by the ALCP2 programme, implemented by Mercy Corps Georgia. The ALCP2 is funded by the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) in collaboration with the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) and Sweden.
